Welsh Woman of the Year
The winners of the Welsh Women of the Year can be read online after being published in the Western Mail on the weekend. There was one award that surprised me upon publication of a recent report.
The Western Mail Val Feld Award
Name: Jane Hutt, AM.
Age: 58
Lives: Barry
Profile: Education Minister for the Welsh Assembly Government.
Jane Hutt is formerly the Health Minister, and is the Labour AM for the Vale of Glamorgan. She was first elected in 1999.
Jane said:
I was surprised and honoured to receive this special award, which was given in memory of Val Feld, whose lifetime contribution to promoting equality and fair play in Wales I deeply admire.Jane Hutt AM was surprised to receive the award, but not as surprised as some.
Congratulations to all winners and I hope that I'm not sounding too bias.

You are not alone. This surprised a lot of us. If there was prize money she'd hand it back.
She is worse than useless. And has a ferret for hair.
Seriously, she has never impressed as a minister. One can only assume that she's simply there to stop weaker AMs from entering government, or she has something on Rhodri Morgan.
I was told that her husband had become a senior civil servant since she was made a cabinet minister all those years ago. Don't suppose there's any connection.
Isnt she yet another non Welsh Assembly Member? You must have your own idiots to choose from without nicking some of ours.
From what I understand she's fortunate that Alun Cairns AM didn't decide to stand in the Vale of Glamorgan at the last Assembly election or she would now be an ex-minister.
the Vale of Glamorgan will fall next time, but she's had a good innings.
I think its time these awards were binned anyway.
They are well past their sell by date.
There is a prize and I hope she donates it to Charity.
I just think it’s not an appropriate person to give this sort of award to. There are many women, and men that I know who have contributed far more to the equal opportunities field.
No offence to Ms Hutt – wonder who nominated her, and don’t you have to write some blurb yourself if you get nominated.
I'll second that Valleys Mam.
It certainly makes you wonder who was on the panel and what their influences were.
The answer is simple: Sucking up to the government in a chosen area in order to make that area more recognised. We lead the way, so give us a pat on the back.
Hutt's response to the head of department leaving is pretty poor. I guess she'll have someone to blame for all the education mess.
More on this from Miss Wagstaff on Tuesday when she returns from a break.
