DotCYM, an unsavoury opportunity for some
A £20,000 grant to secure a "dot cym" internet address for Wales is to be given by the assembly government.
Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said the money was to support the DotCYM campaign for a Welsh version of the .com or co.uk endings. He said it would "open up new marketing opportunities and help promote the Wales brand."
Broadcasters on BBC Wales news were reluctant to pronounce the proposed "dot CYM" type internet address. Instead, spelling out the name as "dot C-Y-M"
I wonder why this could be. Surely it couldn't be down to the opportunity for some on the World Wide Web. Just goes to show that some things are not thought through from start to finish.

This is a rather circular problem. I've heard New York City want to establish a .nyc domain name and NYC is very well known brand worldwide. The purpose as I understand it is to exploit that potential for Wales with .cym - but it might just confuse people.
Anyway I've also heard that ICANN, the body that manages domain names, might well relax the restrictions on them anyway, in which case .cym might be lost in a sea of other (more prominent) domain names. Alongside other promotional activity this COULD work, I think.
'pow' may make more of an impact - pun intended [Principality of Wales].

There's a limit to the length of a top level domain name.
More 'cardiff bay' do gooders wasting money if you ask me...
There soon won't be a limit and in theory any top level domain can be registered (though at a price).

If a Welsh tld is required... then .cymru makes more sense. Surely WAG can see the flaws - £20k wasted I'm afraid
